Physiology and pathophysiology of sitting

DescriptionTechnification and automation are characteristics of the modern working world. As a result, most work is done mostly seated and at low physical activity levels. In addition, the leisure time behaviour of large population groups is also characterised by physical inactivity, such as media consumption, often for hours. The net result is a psycho-physical deconditioning cycle, leading not only to health complaints and inability to work - with considerable consequential costs for companies and the health system - but also to increased mortality rates. The class will present and discuss research methods and physiological reactions and adaptations to sitting and other forms of chronic underload.
