For the mixed relay, the Allgemeine Deutsche Hochschulsportverband (adh) nominated Julia Bodenschatz (German Sport University Cologne), Jan Scheffold (University of Freiburg), Sophie Gießmann (IU International University of Applied Sciences), and Benedikt Bettin (University of Freiburg) for the mixed relay.
Spoho student Julia Bodenschatz, as the starting athlete, laid the foundation for the team’s eventual success. After a strong swim, she got on the bike alongside the top athletes and, following a spirited run, handed off to Scheffold in fourth place. The Freiburg native built on his strong individual performance and played a decisive role in shaping the race in all three disciplines.
In second place, Sophie Gießmann then took to the course. The athlete from IU International University of Applied Sciences had a strong swim and held her own against the international competition, allowing Benedikt Bettin to start the decisive leg for the German relay team in fourth place. Bettin stayed with the lead group until the end of the cycling leg and then broke away together with the representatives from Great Britain and the Netherlands. On the running course, a high-stakes elimination race unfolded. On his third surge, the German athlete—who had already won gold in the individual event—managed to decisively shake off his last remaining competitor, crossing the finish line first.
