1) FAQs on opening hours of facilities and on events

1.1 Are the sports facilities open?

1.1 Are the sports facilities open?

Currently, all halls and sports facilities, indoor and outdoor facilities (e.g. swimming center, athletics center, track and field facility, gymnasiums, tennis courts), are closed to external persons and visitors of the German Sport University Cologne. Only students and staff* of the German Sport University Cologne are permitted to use the facilities for teaching and examination purposes. External rentals are not possible.

1.2. Are canteen, bistro, copy shop & spoho shop open?
  • Canteen and cafeteria remain closed beyond January 11, 2021. This applies for the time being until further notice!
  • There is NO to-go offer there!
  • Changes possible depending on further developments.
  • The opening hours of the in-house print store (Copy Shop) as of 03.11.2020 are as follows: Mon-Fri from 10 am - 1 pm.
  • The Spoho Shop is closed at the moment.
1.3 When is the next aptitude test?

The aptitude test planned for February 2021 will be cancelled!

Instead, two alternative dates will be offered at SoSe 2021, which will probably be in the week of Whitsun and in summer.

Students who are already enrolled at the GSU with reservations (either since winter semester 2020/21 or in the upcoming summer semester 2021) may attend both dates.

Prospective students who are not enrolled at the GSU can only attend the second date in summer.

The conditional enrollment will be maintained (also for first-year students of winter semester 2020/21). This means: the aptitude test must be taken in any case! If the aptitude test is not verified by 30.09.2021, it is not possible to re-register for the next semester of WiSe 2021/22. In this case, credits already earned in winter semester 2020/21 or summer semester 2021 will be retained and, if applicable, will be credited when re-registering.

1.6 Do events take place at GSU?

Due to the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the federal and state governments have jointly agreed to ban large-scale events. In addition, according to the Corona Protection Ordinance, only teaching and examination activities at universities [...] may be carried out in accordance with separate orders pursuant to Section 28 (1) of the Infection Protection Act. The university management decides on this. It goes without saying that the distance and hygiene regulations must be observed. The face-to-face teaching events of the winter semester 2020/21 will be organized as online events as far as possible until the end of the semester.

Events outside the teaching and examination schedule of the German Sport University are currently cancelled and will not be able to take place until further notice.
You can find out about various digital information events on our events page.

1.7 How can the Central Library of Sports Sciences be reached?

1.7 How can the Central Library of Sports Sciences be reached?

The Central Library of Sports Sciences has restricted use and access. Among other things, the stay and use of workstations is not possible; the library is not available as a place of learning. There is a pick-up service for books, and returns are also available. All information about the restrictions can be found on the Corona home page of the Central Library here.

8.5. When does the lecture period start in summer 21?

8.5. When does the lecture period start in summer 21?

2) FAQs on how to reach the GSU staff

2.1 Are there any restrictions in teaching and studying?

In general, teaching and examination operations at universities are permitted under Section 28(1) of the Infection Protection Act. During teaching events and examinations, hygiene and distance rules, limitation of access and traceability must be ensured. Thus, the current teaching and study activities are running under special conditions. The face-to-face teaching events of the winter semester 2020/21 will be largely organized as online events until the end of the semester.

The Rectorate of the German Sport University Cologne has adopted a concept for the implementation of practical sport courses as well as other face-to-face courses. The so-called implementation concept is available on the intranet. Among other things, it answers organizational questions about the course of instruction.

The lecture period of the winter semester 2020/21 starts on October 26 and ends on February 12, 2021. Further dates and deadlines can be found here.

Please keep up to date via this page. Students will also be informed by the university management by mail if there are any fundamental changes.

2.2 How can I reach the service areas (e.g. administration)?

3.10 I could not pass a learning success test. How do I get credit...

3.10 I could not pass a learning success test. How do I get credit for my course?

Due to the current situation, teachers can find flexible solutions with regard to learning assessment (LEK) (e.g. suspending the LEK, postponing the LEK, alternative examination forms). A PD should still be credited despite the failure of a course if it is necessary to attend a course in the summer semester.

3.11 An examination was to be conducted as a presentation (e.g. at...

3.11 An examination was to be conducted as a presentation (e.g. at the Master Congress) and was cancelled. What do I do?

For presentation exams the supervisors should offer alternative forms of examination as a substitute. Please contact your lecturers.

3.12 Can deadlines be extended?

3.13 An exam or my final thesis is related to a project/experiment...

3.13 An exam or my final thesis is related to a project/experiment that might be postponed. What do I do?

Project work that requires social contact should be suspended until further notice. The decision is made by the supervisors after careful consideration, taking into account the special regulations published by the university. Substitutes can be defined for examinations. Deadlines can be postponed for final theses (see FAQ on "Can deadlines for final theses be extended due to the special situation?").

3.14 My last exam in my studies was cancelled and I want to take a...

3.14 My last exam in my studies was cancelled and I want to take a job - is there a special regulation?

In special cases, a hardship clause is possible under certain circumstances, e.g. if there is proof that starting a job is directly endangered. A hardship case should be applied for at the head of the program with appropriate proof. However, no guarantee can be given for a special arrangement.

3.17 What should be considered when registering the thesis?

3.20 If no physical aptitude test is possible in spring 2021, what happens if I am admitted to the winter semester 2020/2021?

If the aptitude test cannot take place in the spring of 2021, students who have been enrolled with reservations without proof of aptitude test can still re-register for the summer semester 2021. Whether or how the proof of aptitude test has to be provided or made up for in this case will be decided in due course.

4) FAQs on medical aspects

4.1 I am directly affected by quarantine. What does that mean?

The quarantine requirements of the competent authorities must be complied with in all cases.

Please submit the relevant administrative order of the Health Office to the Personnel Administration Department (D2) or the Examination Office without delay. The administrative order also specifies the duration of your quarantine.

If an infection is detected, students report their infection centrally to covidtestpositiv@dshs-koeln.de. This does not apply if infection of other university members or relatives can be excluded.

Students are required to stay away from examinations in which they cannot take part due to a quarantine order and must inform the examinations office immediately (e.g. illness). If the quarantine has other effects, e.g. on registration times, submission of papers, etc., you must contact the lecturers to find possible amicable solutions. The German Sport University will try to find individual solutions.

4.2 I am indirectly affected by quarantine (daycare, nursery).

In principle, your affliction is to be classified similar to the situation of a strike by the nursery school teachers, so that you are not released from your obligation to work and to be present. In any case, however, you should contact your immediate superior, who will try to find a satisfactory solution.

4.3 I have contact with an infected person. What should I do?

Szenario a) - There is a person suffering from corona in my environment:

If corona infection is detected in a person, the public health department registers the contact persons and arranges further measures for them, such as ordering a domestic quarantine. If you are one of these contact persons, the public health department will immediately order a home isolation (= quarantine) for you in accordance with the regulations of the infection protection law. You are then no longer allowed to leave your home and may not carry out your professional activity or any activity that brings you into contact with other people. However, working from home is permitted.

  • Students are obliged to inform the Registrar's Office of the German Sport University and, in the event of a missed exam, the Examinations Office immediately.
  • In case of proven infection, students report their infection centrally to covidtestpositiv@dshs-koeln.de. This does not apply if infection of other university members or relatives can be excluded.

Szenario b and c) - In my environment there is a person b) quarantined by the authorities c) a person who has had contact with a sick or quarantined person:

If you have been in contact with a person who has been in contact with a person who has been proven to be infected with the corona virus, there is no ban on entering the premises - regardless of whether this contact person has been quarantined by the authorities or not - in agreement with the health authorities. In this case, students are not excused for failing to take part in an examination.

Generally speaking: If you notice symptoms that make an infection with the coronavirus probable, contact your family doctor by telephone and ask him/her to clarify whether you are infected. Until the situation has not been clarified, do not go to the German Sport University and please take the generally recommended protective measures, which you can read about on this page. However, please inform your doctor about your contact with an infected person.

4.4 Behaviour after an excursion or holiday abroad

Due to recent reports of suspected significantly more contagious mutations of the corona virus, an ordinance for entries from the United Kingdom and South Africa came into force in North Rhine-Westphalia on December 21, 2020. From December 28, 2020, the Corona entry regulation will be extended to include all risk areas listed by the Robert Koch Institute on the Internet.

For the vast majority of people entering NRW, quarantine is only mandatory if they do not undergo entry testing. Entry testing must be fulfilled by rapid or PCR testing within a maximum of 48 hours before entry or immediately after entry.

Further information can be found on this website of the state of NRW under the item "Corona - Entry requirements".

4.5 Behavior of persons with a cold

4.5 Behavior of persons with a cold

Students or teachers do not have access
- with a Covid19 infection or an acute suspicion of Covid19
- with symptoms that suggest a suspected Covid-19 disease (e.g. cold-like or flu-like symptoms; see also Campus Hygiene Concept) or
- with proven contact to demonstrably infected persons within the last 14 days.

These exclusion criteria must be regularly checked at the latest during the compulsory presence check. Teachers are entitled to exclude students from the teaching unit under consideration of the above mentioned criteria.

Sniffles as the only symptom: If there are no other of the most common symptoms apart from sniffles (i.e. a "runny nose"), i.e. no cough, no fever, no disturbance of the sense of smell and/or taste (with a clear nose), the regulations in the Campus Hygiene Concept apply (e.g. stay at home if possible, reduce personal contact and strictly observe the minimum distance, wear a mouth-nose cover throughout), especially good hand and sneezing hygiene. In addition, in the case of a cold, participation in practical instruction is only "passively" permitted in order to be able to ensure that the distance is regulated and that the mouth-nose cover is worn continuously.

4.6 What happens if there is a corona case or a well-founded...

4.6 What happens if there is a corona case or a well-founded suspicion in a course?

A corona infection or officially ordered quarantine is handled in the same way as any other disease. The missed hours are therefore considered as absences. The teacher has the possibility to compensate the absences by alternative tasks for the affected students, if this is justifiable in terms of content.

4.7 How does tracking work in terms of infection protection?

4.7 How does tracking work in terms of infection protection?

In seminar rooms the special tracking (= traceability) takes place. The presence and seating position are documented. In contrast, only simple tracking (= traceability) takes place in practical courses. Here only the attendance is documented. Further information is available in the implementation concept on the intranet.

4.8 I have tested positive. What do I have to do?

4.8 I have tested positive. What do I have to do?

If an infection is detected, students report their infection centrally to covidtestpositiv@dshs-koeln.de. This does not apply if infection of other university members or relatives can be excluded.

Persons with a corona infection are not allowed to enter the GSU (grounds and buildings) until it is proven that the disease has healed or is no longer contagious. For them, as a matter of due care and protection of third parties, they are banned from the premises.

Regarding the quarantine, please also see FAQ 4.1.

4.9 When can I attend courses again after quarantine or a positive...

4.9 When can I attend courses again after quarantine or a positive test?

Usually after a quarantine or a positive test with quarantine an official proof (health authority) of the end point of the quarantine is sufficient. From this endpoint on, the person concerned can participate in classes again. A special health report is usually not necessary.

4.10 When can I actively participate in practical sports courses...

4.10 When can I actively participate in practical sports courses again after a positive test? (sports ability)

When the ability to exercise can be restored after an illness with Covid 19 depends to a large extent on the course of the illness and can only be decided by a doctor in case of doubt. Sports medicine recommends a break of at least two weeks from intensive sport (corresponds to the quarantine length), even if the course of the disease is asymptomatic, and significantly longer in syptomatic or more severe cases (see position paper with the participation of DGSP and DOSB).

5) FAQs on other topics

5.2 Are the books from the ZBSport (library) automatically renewed?

The library is currently open to a very limited extent. Thus, for example, the return of media - for the time being until January 10, 2021 - is not possible. All further information on the Corona situation and its impact on ZBSport as well as the accessibility of ZBSport staff can be found here.

5.3 Excursions - what is the procedure?

Excursions can take place in principle. If necessary, they have to be arranged with the head of the program and/or the module representative and additional regulations have to be observed. Therefore, contact must be made with these persons. The current travel and residence regulations of the cities and countries affected by the excursion must be observed.

In the case of cancelled excursions, the same applies as for other courses, namely postponement of the course. Due to the special situation (repeatability one year later if necessary), a replacement or a change of the excursion form is possible in agreement with the course director.

5.4 How are aptitude and orientation internships (EOP) and vocational...

5.4 How are aptitude and orientation internships (EOP) and vocational field internships (BFP) that have already begun dealt with?

For the time being, the German Sport University Cologne follows the regulations of the University of Cologne with regard to the special regulation of internship days for the EOP and the BFP. All students who have completed at least 15 days of internship will be recognized as having completed the EOP or BFP. Students who have completed a shorter internship period are free to decide whether they want to make up the days missing to complete the 15 days individually in May/June or complete them in a block in September. In the latter case, please contact us at so that we can include you in a follow-up seminar of the summer semester 2020. The internship school or internship location where you continue the EOP or BPF does not have to be the same as where you started. The guidelines of the German Sport University Cologne for the follow-up and the portfolio remain unaffected.

5.5 My TOEFL test was cancelled. Is there another way to prove...

5.5 My TOEFL test was cancelled. Is there another way to prove English language skills?

For Non-EU citizens applying for the four English-speaking Master´s degree programmes at GSU: Successful completion of the English language test (TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate, level C1) is a prerequisite for admission to English-language Master's programmes at the German Sport University Cologne (for further information, please see "Application Master").

Proof of successful completion must have been submitted by September 18, 2020. If you have further questions, please contact us by mail email.

5.6. Is it allowed to enter the German Sport University for a short...

5.6. Is it allowed to enter the German Sport University for a short time if the student is banned from the house?

No, students who have been banned from the premises (see II. Preventive measures to prevent infections) are not allowed to enter the university premises, even for a short time.

5.7 How to deal with compulsory internships according to the study...

5.7 How to deal with compulsory internships according to the study regulations?

Contracts for compulsory internships can only be concluded if the supervising department can ensure that the necessary contents can still be imparted during the internship in the home office and the other requirements for the internship from the individual study regulations are guaranteed. A corresponding informal certificate must be provided by the internship supervisor (e.g. by e-mail).

Internships that are currently running (or already contractually fixed) can be cancelled at the request of the students or at the request of the supervising institution. In this case, the institution should allow the internship to be resumed later if the student expresses the wish.

Contracts for voluntary internships outside of a curricular necessity will be postponed until regular operation is possible again.

5.8 I am missing technical possibilities, hardware or software. What...

5.8 I am missing technical possibilities, hardware or software. What do I do?

Regarding software, the German Sport University Cologne joins the federal contract Microsoft, also to give students access to Microsoft Office. With regard to this contract, tender and award deadlines still have to be considered.

With regard to other technical problems (internet access, hardware), we ask you to inform us at short notice (e.g. via the ) in case of particular hardship. The university will try to find individual solutions.

Students who cannot work digitally at home due to a lack of technical facilities (hardware/software problems) have the possibility to use the study rooms temporarily set up in the Spoho's guest house. These rooms are reserved via wise2020-stud@dshs-koeln.de.

5.9 Financing, bridging assistance and BAföG

5.9 Financing, bridging assistance and BAföG

Bridging assistance for students in acute emergency situations:
Students who are in particularly acute need and directly dependent on help as a result of the Corona pandemic can apply for a bridging aid in the form of a non-repayable grant from their student union or student services organization. The measure was extended by one month and could therefore also be applied for in September. As of November, this assistance will now be reinstated for the entire winter semester.

Eligible for application are students who are enrolled at a state or state-recognized university in Germany at the time of application, who live in Germany and who have not been on leave of absence. This applies to students from Germany and abroad, without age limit.
The grant is awarded monthly up to a maximum amount of 500 euros. Responsible for processing applications are the 57 regional student and student services organizations, whereby applications are submitted exclusively online via the established nationwide standardized IT platform. An application is possible again since 20.11.
Kölner Studierendenwerk.
In a three-minute video, Bianca Kröker, who processes daily student applications at the Cologne student union Corona-Übrückungshilfe, explains her personal tips for filling out the application form.
BAföG: According to § 10 paragraph 1 of the Corona Epidemic University Ordinance of April 15, 2020, the standard period of study is increased by one semester for those students who are enrolled in a university course of study or in a course of study that is completed with a state or church examination in the summer semester of 2020 and as long as they are not on leave of absence.
This means that the maximum duration of funding for this group of people has been increased by one semester in accordance with §15a paragraph 1 of the Federal Training Assistance Act.
Further information on specific BAföG regulations can be found at:www.bafög.de
Financing: In case of financial emergencies, please contact the student advisory service. An example of special support programs are the interest-free loans for women of the Hildegardis Association

Due to the currently increased risk of infection, all seminar and exercise events will start online for the time being. This change will initially apply to most events until November 29, 2020. We will provide information about exceptions with an earlier start of attendance during the course of the week, and the list of attendance seminars and exercises will be updated accordingly.

On Monday, November 9, 2020, attendance classes at the German Sport University Cologne will begin in all practical sports courses that, according to the LSF, should start in attendance on November 2.
Also a small number of seminars, exercises and teaching exercises will take place in attendance. These events can be viewed in a separate list.

PLEASE NOTE: Even events that are approved in attendance can sometimes take place ONLINE. This applies to both practical and seminar events (or exercises). Please check in Moodle beforehand if there are any special regulations for your classroom event.

6.11 Regulations for classroom teaching as of January 11, 2021

The face-to-face courses of the winter semester 2020/21 shall be conducted as online courses until the end of the semester, if possible. Should classroom teaching be unavoidable to ensure the successful completion of courses (e.g. to pass examinations), the Prorectorate for Studies, Teaching and Quality Management asks to be informed in this regard. The decision on this is made by the respective teaching staff in consultation with the heads of the modules and study programs, with special consideration of health protection.

8) FAQs for prospective students

8.1 When is the next aptitude test?

8.1 When is the next aptitude test?

8.3 Changes in the Application and Admission Procedure for the 2021 Summer Semester

Bachelor & Teacher training:

An application for the summer semester 2021 as well as an admission is possible without the aptitude test proof! In case of an admission without aptitude test, the aptitude test has to be taken in any case! If the proof of the aptitude test is not submitted by 30.09.2021, re-registration for the next semester for the winter semester 2021/2022 is not possible. In this case, registration is subject to reservation. However, study and examination credits earned up to that date will be retained and can be recognized when re-admitting students.

Applicants with a valid aptitude test can participate in the application and admission procedure as usual.

All information about applying for a place at the German Sport University Cologne can be found here.

However, the aptitude test must be taken by 30.9.2021 at the latest! Otherwise it is not possible to re-register for the winter semester 2021/2022.
