In 1963, the move to the current campus was completed and a year later the Sport University of Cologne received its “sui generis“ status. With its new directoral status which came into effect on 1st January 1965, it was renamed the Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln (German Sport University Cologne, GSU), the first institutes were founded and academic chairs staffed.

In 1970, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded doctoral and post-doctoral law to the University and the status of a Scientific University in the University hierarchy. This reinforced the structural dynamic, which was reflected in increasing diversification of the institutional landscape and professorships. Development, which also included the construction of new high-performance sport facilities, was supported by the awakening of political awareness of sport related to the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

The diversification of sport science in more specialised teaching, research and sport areas, was to lead to a four-branch faculty structure in 1972. However, the education policy tended towards a “Gesamthochschule”(Comprehensive University of Cologne) integrating the GSU. The advocacy of independence characterised the following years. By the amendment of the law governing scientific universities in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, finally the independent status of the GSU was confirmed in 1979.
