The Institute of Communication and Media Research of the German Sport University Cologne is unique in Europe in the thematic orientation of its research and teaching.

The Institute combines a specific focus on sport with the theories, research approaches and methods of the communication sciences. Communication sciences is understood here as an interdisciplinary subject with references to psychology, sociology, economics and media economy and a social-science focus.

The Institute’s long-standing training and cooperation partners include radio and television broadcasting companies, PR departments of sport clubs, associations, publishers as well as advertising, PR and media agencies. The main research areas of the Institute include processes for the perception of sport, advertising and disability as well as the study of the media effects of sport reporting and the visualisation, aestheticisation and emotionalisation of media sport.
