Prof. Stephan Wassong has received a distinguished academic Olympic award from the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH).
The Dimitios Vikelas Plaque was named after the first President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The plaque has been awarded to Stephan Wassong at the US Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs on October 7th. The Vikelas Plaque was introduced in 2007 and is intended to be given to scholars who have made significant and valuable contributions to Olympic research and teaching over a long time.
Following the speech from ISOH President Dr. Christian Wacker, the academic expertise of Stephan Wassong clearly meets the intention and profile of the Vikelas Plaque. This was echoed by statements from other participants of the ceremony, including Prof. em. Robert K. Barney (Canada), Prof. Kostas Georgiadis (International Olympic Academy), Markus Osterwalder (ISOH Secretary-General) and Maria Bogner (IOC Olympic Studies Centre).
After the award ceremony, Stephan Wassong delivered a lecture entitled: "Pierre de Coubertin's Network in the USA and its Importance for the Foundation of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Idea". The topic of the presentation has sparked interest in developing project ideas on future exhibitions in the run-up to the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
Stephan Wassong expressed his gratitude to the board of the ISOH and its members for having trusted him as the award bearer.
