Despite assurances to the contrary, sport and democracy are often in a certain tense relationship. This is evident in youth and amateur sport as well as in professional sport. After the Winter Olympics in Beijing and the Football World Cup in Qatar, major sporting events will once again take place in democratic countries in 2024 with the European Men's Football Championship in Germany and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

A few weeks before the opening of the European Football Championship, which will once again put soccer and sport in general at the center of public debate, the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) and the German Sport & Olympia Museum (DSOM) in Cologne are taking a look at questions of democracy in sport.

The bpb and the DSOM cordially invite you to the symposium "Sport and Democracy" and recommend that you attend in person in order to facilitate lively exchange, networking and controversial discussions both during the individual program items and during the breaks. For all those who are unable to attend on site despite these advantages, the bpb is offering an online stream of the event (registration required).

Target group:
Professional and voluntary multipliers from sport, (political) education, social work, initiatives, administration, science and journalism.
