3rd Summer School

Review

The 3rd Summer School of the Institute of European Sport Development and Leisure Studies (IESF) started on July 14th, 2019, lasting 28 days until August 11th. 17 Chinese students joined in the Summer School from the academic cooperation partner of IESF namely Chengdu Sports University, Wuhan Sports University, and College of Physical Education of Sichuan University. And compared to the last summer school in 2018, there is a clearly more participation of female students (9/17) and of master´s students (10/17) in this year.

Due to this mixed group of master´s and bachelor´s students and their existing language skills, theoretical topics could be dealt within in deep, such as German Education system, German Sport system, Leisure studies, Olympic studies, Academic Writing, Sport Business, Diversity in Sport etc. combined with empirical studies and examples. The topic of sports business did not only refer to the profitability of e.g. (major) sports events. Other aspects such as social capacity, citizen participation, sustainability, diversity etc. could also be taken up and discussed. In the last hours of the lecture, a small debate on the current topic "Extension of the Cologne football stadium" was also simulated, in which all students representing different interest groups were able to directly experience and lead a democratic debate and agreement together.

In addition to explore the above theoretical topics, students experienced more sports activities which the regular students over here also prefer in their leisure time. And every week, guided excursions were organized. Students visited Cologne Cathedral, German Sports and Olympic Museum, and German Football Museum in Dortmund, as well as the Council of the European Union, European parliament, and the House of European History in Brussel. A cross-country orientation in Eifel national park was arranged as well to provide a more comprehensive view of German and European culture and lifestyles.
