Higher education in the European sports landscape is addressed in different ways: academic sports education in European countries as an integrating instrument for European higher education on the one hand, and sport itself as part of European policy on the other. This book takes up both aspects against the background of the European educational reform (Bologna Process, Lisbon Strategy, Lifelong Learning, European Qualification Framework etc.), focusing on the Thematic Network Project "Aligning a European Higher Education Structure in Sport Science" (AEHESIS). With the aim of combining academic quality and the European dimension with regard to the labour market, this four-year project (2003 - 2007) has established future guidelines and sports curricula in the areas of coaching, health & fitness, sports management and physical education. This approach points to the independent and ongoing role that universities and colleges play in this process.
