Major sporting events have been and continue to be used as a major political stage, for example to overcome conflicts between nations, polish up the image of one's own country, or raise awareness of social and sporting injustices.

Democratic values such as fairness and equality are conveyed through popular or club sports—as a small stage. In addition, this area covers other sports policy issues such as the financing of local sports and gymnastics clubs, the organization of volunteer work, and abuses such as (sexualized) violence or unequal pay for male and female athletes.

This presentation addresses all these and many other aspects, as well as the historical development of international and national sports.
