Sport and Politics

Mittag, Jürgen (2022) / Maximilian Seltmann & Lorenz Fiege: Sport und Politik, Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb (eds.) / Federal Agency for Civic Education, 1st edition, Bonn

The claim that sport is not political has been refuted many times: Major sporting events such as the Olympic Games or men's soccer World Cups are a source of debate because they are sometimes awarded in a non-transparent manner to countries that do not meet democratic requirements. At the same time, top athletes are increasingly using their media reach to send political messages and draw attention to grievances. However, the tense relationship between sport and politics is not only tangible at the level of competitive sport: Children and young people are also grappling with social values such as equality, tolerance and fairness in the school sports hall, at the club or when visiting the stadium.

On four worksheets, the issue explores the links between sport and politics, asks about the impact of major sporting events and discusses possible steps to increase the acceptance of such events. For teachers, the booklet contains a detailed introduction to the topic as well as methodological tips for using the worksheets in the classroom.
