A science slam is a talk where researchers present their science in a given time frame (10 minutes) in front of a non-expert audience, similar to TEDx talks. The focus lies on imparting current science to a diverse audience in an entertaining way. Various presentation media are allowed, e.g. power point presentations, live-experiments or other requisites. The presentation is then judged by the audience. Please have a look at a good example here:
2018 is the year of the soccer World Cup. Modelled on the soccer tournament, the Science Slam World Cup is an international competition for young researchers from all continents to present their own research in a brief and lively science slam format.
15 young researchers from five continents are invited to the German Sport University Cologne to show and explain their own research topic to an audience. Besides advertising their research, the science slammers will have the chance to connect to other international researchers and scientists from the German Sport University. A diverse and interesting program will offer space for networking, new project ideas, sports and cultural events.
The project “Science Slam World Cup 2018” was awarded the start-up prize of the International Research Marketing Competition by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the initiative ‘Promote Innovation and Research in Germany’.
