The Institute of Sport History focuses its research and teaching on the current and cultural history of sport and the history of the Olympic movement.

These areas offer a wide range of starting points for the historical confrontation with sport and the many facets of its appearance and effect. By learning the basics of historical knowledge, the students receive an understanding of the interaction of sport and movement culture with society-wide social processes. The knowledge of the historical roots and traditions of sport should enable the students to perceive current developmental trends in a differentiated manner and critically question them.

The Institute’s projects include the development of the “M.A. Olympic Studies” and “Olympic Studies” (supplement to B.A. profile) study programmes, the “History of the International Anti-Doping Campaign” research project and the processing of the archival resources of the German Sport University Cologne.
