Second module „Olympic Athletes and Elite Sport in Transition“ concluded
The second module of the 10th intake concluded on 28 March at the German Sport University Cologne.
This module „Olympic Athletes and Elite Sport in Transition“ focused on the evolving role of athletes as central actors within the Olympic Movement and examines how their institutional position continues to transform both within and beyond elite sport. As the landscape of high-performance sport becomes increasingly complex, participants explore the expectations placed on athletes as role models, as well as the growing importance of their social, political, and educational responsibilities.
Key themes included the interdependence between athletes and their support networks (particularly coaches and educators) as well as the holistic wellbeing of athletes and their transition into post-athletic careers. The module also addressed athletes’ rights and dual-career opportunities.
The module was led by an outstanding international teaching team: Prof. Stephan Wassong, Dr. Susannah Smith, and Prof. Ian Culpan from the New Zealand Centre for Olympic Studies, alongside Philipp Wäffler from the Eidgenössische Hochschule für Sport Magglingen EHSM.
