Welcome!

With increases in life expectancy, questions about the quality of ageing become more important. In its research and teaching, the Institute of Movement and Sport Gerontology of the German Sport University Cologne addresses the question of how and why physical activity and functioning may change with ageing.

Our research focuses on age-related changes in physical and cognitive functioning, neuromuscular adaptability, and everyday physical activity. Research outcomes are used to develop effective, evidence-based interventions which allow older people to maintain an active and independent lifestyle.

The Institute’s research and teaching are based on theories and methods from social sciences, life science and engineering sciences. Many of the Institute’s projects involve interdisciplinary cooperation with partners in Germany and abroad.
