POLIS stands for Policy and Politics In Sport.
POLIS aims at a closer cooperation of academics who work in the emerging field of sport politics or who deal with political issues related to sport.
Following a spontaneous initiative of Jeroen Scheerder (University of Leuven) during a talk at German Sport University Cologne several conferences of the last months have fostered the idea to establish a new network – POLIS (POLicy and Politics In Sport) – that is dedicated to political sciences oriented approaches to sport. Seeing the emerge of more and more studies in the field there is apparently a growing demand for systematic reflections and a stronger collaboration among researchers in Europe.
The support of this idea has in particular become evident when Till Mueller-Schoell and Ninja Putzmann explained during the EASS conference 2017 in Prague the vision of a network that is supposed to become the umbrella for permanent and substantial exchange of comparative research projects in sport policy and politics. Parallely, at the Sport&EU-conference 2017 in Molde Jürgen Mittag presented POLIS as a network that can bring together theoretical and practical experts.
The network is loosely connected to the EASS (European Association for the Sociology of Sport), and to Sport&EU (Association for the Study of Sport and the European Union).
Conferences and meetings:
Network-meeting in Papendal in November 2018:
The meeting led to various possibilities for collaboration, like the exchange of staff and knowledge within the master program of DSHS and HAN and expand the post-doc dimensions. In addition several attendees agreed to work together on a Erasmus+ program to obtain a grant for international research on sports policy and politics. Thirdly we made an inventory for an editorial book with an international comparative analysis on Disability sports (by Caroline van Lindert & Jeroen Scheerder) that will appear in 2019. And last, but not least we agreed to meet again in June in Norway, at the next EASS conference. Agenda of the meeting
