Sport&EU Conference 2014

This is the first time that Sport&EU is organised jointly by two hosts in an all-sport campus location, offering an inspirational surrounding for speakers, paper givers and participants. The conference will take place in the leafy surroundings of the German Sports University’s campus (in the outskirts of Cologne) and in FC Cologne’s stadium. Both places promise to be an ideal setting for Sport&EU delegates.

The University is recognized internationally for its research: the Faculty of Biochemistry’s renowned testing laboratory has been a part of the international fight against doping (there will be the opportunity of a guided tour), experiments conducted at the Faculty of Physiology and Anatomy have soared with the astronauts into space, and the Research Centre for Performance Sport has brought together the combined efforts of multiple departments to coach and supervise elite athletes. The 20 institutes at the German Sport University Cologne – from education and humanities to social sciences and biomedicine – offer a diverse array of teaching and research opportunities to the university’s some 5.000 students from more than 60 countries. The campus, located directly across from the Muengersdorf Sport Park in the outskirts of Cologne, provides students and staff alike a first-class environment for learning, working, and living.

The Institute of European Sport Development and Leisure Studies takes responsibility for the political science activities of the German Sports University referring in particular to the European dimension of sport and leisure studies. The academic team offers a broad scope of information and support to students, academics and other people interested. Key focuses of the institute are the areas “Sport Politics” and “Leisure and Tourism-Studies”. Furthermore, the institute includes the “Sport Politics Forum” and the “European Affairs Office” with services about studying abroad. The Institute of Political Sciences looks back on a long tradition at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz. It covers many areas, from international politics to political sociology and therefore offers a broad scientifical input to the conference.

Together with the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz the German Sport University Cologne marks the host the Sport&EU 2014 conference. As one of the biggest sport specific universities world-wide it offers a stimulation environment to discuss current developments in sport politics. The two institutes in charge are aiming in particular to contribute substantially to the issue of Sport and EU in the next years. The conference will be a substantial basis for ongoing and new research activities and it will help to establish new links in a growing academic network.
