The M.Sc. Sport Management (SMA) combines management, economics, research and international perspectives in order to prepare students for the dynamic and knowledge-intensive sports industry. You will learn how to analyse complex managerial challenges systematically and develop evidence-based solutions for real-world sport business contexts.
The programme is particularly suited for graduates with a background in business administration, economics, marketing or sport management. Previous experience in the sports business is beneficial. Students should have a strong interest in business-related topics in sport, enjoy analytical and research-oriented work, and feel comfortable working both independently and in teams.

This requirement is waived for native English speakers and for applicants who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in English within the EU or in an English-speaking country. German language skills are not mandatory for admission, but basic knowledge of German is recommended.
SMA is a full-time programme completed over four semesters (two years). Courses are typically scheduled on two to three days per week and are delivered in compact teaching formats during the first three semesters.
The programme consists of 12 modules, including the Master’s thesis, and leads to a total of 120 credit points. Credit points are awarded according to the workload required for each module.
Teaching is delivered by the Institute of Sport Economics and Sport Management in cooperation with other institutes at the German Sport University Cologne. In addition, international lecturers from Europe and overseas contribute to the programme, strengthening its global and intercultural orientation.
Throughout the programme, you will develop advanced knowledge in sport management, economics and research methods. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, problem-solving and the application of scientific knowledge to management practice in the sports industry.
As the sports industry continues to grow and become increasingly commercialised, the demand for highly qualified sport managers is steadily increasing. Graduates of the M.Sc. Sport Management are well prepared for leadership and specialist roles within national and international sport organisations.
Possible career paths include positions in general sport management as well as specialised roles in strategy, marketing, budgeting, personnel management or consulting. The programme also prepares graduates for analytical and advisory functions in the sports business sector.
