Sport Management programme is a good fit for you.

The programme combines management, economics, research and international perspectives. At its core is a research-based approach to current issues in the sport industry. You will learn how to analyse complex developments systematically, apply scientific methods and develop practical solutions based on current empirical evidence. Alongside this, you will build methodological and analytical expertise as well as intercultural communication skills.

The Master’s programme is particularly suited to graduates with a background in business administration, economics, marketing or sport management. Previous practical experience in the sport industry is beneficial. If you are interested in business-related questions in sport, enjoy research-oriented work and bring strong analytical skills, the programme provides a solid academic foundation for demanding specialist and leadership roles in an international environment.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for this Master’s degree course include a completed Bachelor’s degree, in which at least 180 credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) have been acquired, or an equivalent university degree.

 

The following requirements also apply in accordance with Paragraph 1 of the Admissions Regulations of the GSU:

  • Bachelor’s degree programme with either:
    • sport science as the main orientation, with at least 90 credits, or
    • economics, business administration or national economics as the main orientation, or
    • communication science, with a focus on marketing, as the main orientation, or
    • a degree in law as the main orientation.
  • Evidence of study content in statistics or methodological competence in a relevant degree, usually a minimum of 10 credits.
  • Your personal and professional suitability is assessed based on your CV and a letter of motivation.
  • As the programme is taught entirely in English, you must provide proof of English language proficiency through one of the following:
    • TOEFL iBT, minimum 95 points
    • IELTS Academic, minimum 7.0
    • Cambridge Certificate, CAE at C1 level

The language requirement is waived for native English speakers and for applicants who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in English within the EU or in an English-speaking country. German language proficiency is not required for admission; basic knowledge of German is recommended.

 

 

Degree Structure and Content

The M.Sc. Sport Management is a full-time, campus-based programme completed over four semesters (two years). Regular classes usually take place on campus on two to three days per week and are supplemented by compact teaching formats.

Throughout the programme, you will develop advanced knowledge in sport management, economics and research methods. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, problem-solving and the application of scientific knowledge to management practice in the sport industry.

Teaching is delivered by the Institute of Sport Economics and Sport Management in cooperation with other institutes at the German Sport University Cologne. In addition, international lecturers and practitioners from Europe and overseas contribute to the programme, strengthening its global and intercultural orientation.

The programme consists of 12 modules, including the Master’s thesis, and leads to a total of 120 credit points. Credit points are awarded according to the workload required for each module.

As the sport industry continues to grow and become increasingly commercialised, the demand for highly qualified sport managers is steadily increasing. Graduates of the M.Sc. Sport Management are well prepared for leadership and specialist roles in national and international sport organisations.

Possible career paths include positions in general sport management as well as specialised roles in strategy, marketing, budgeting, personnel management or consulting. The programme also prepares graduates for analytical and advisory functions in the sport business sector.

Potential employers include sport organisations and federations, professional sport clubs, agencies, consultancies and other companies connected to the sport industry.
