We are the German Sport University Cologne—Germany’s only university dedicated entirely to sports science. Since 1947, we have combined excellent teaching, world-class international research, and elite sports at the highest level. Across 19 institutes, five transfer centers, and four affiliated institutes, we explore the full spectrum of sports science—from health and performance to society and education, as well as economic, historical, and ethical issues.
Over 6,000 students from more than 85 countries and approximately 1,000 staff members shape our vibrant campus community at Sportpark Müngersdorf. Here, we offer innovative degree programs, a unique infrastructure, and close collaborations with partners worldwide. Together, we are shaping the future of sports—interdisciplinary, international, and at the cutting edge.
Understanding movement. Developing performance. Shaping the future. At the German Sport University Cologne, you’ll study sport in all its facets – with a solid scientific foundation and a practical focus! In addition to teacher training for all five types of school, we offer five Bachelor’s degree programmes in sports science, eight consecutive Master’s degree programmes, six postgraduate Master’s programmes and a PhD programme.
For us, sport is more than just exercise; sport is what drives us! Our aim is to educate students on the basis of excellent research and to impart the latest scientific findings to them. Curious?
What topics spring to mind when you think of sports science? Performance diagnostics? Nutrition? Match analysis and anti-doping research? Correct! But sports science is so much more than that. Sports science deals with sport, exercise and physical activity in many forms and fields — from desert treks and bed rest studies to experiments conducted in space. Sports science looks into the smallest muscle cell and the largest stadium; sports science is fascinating and multifaceted; sports science moves us.
Our research follows the guiding principle of ‘sport and exercise’ and focuses on the key themes of performance, education and health. Our interdisciplinary approach creates ideal conditions for addressing complex issues holistically and developing innovative solutions with societal relevance.
For us, knowledge transfer means more than simply passing on knowledge: we translate excellent sports science research into practical solutions – in collaboration with industry, society and practitioners. We support our researchers in transferring their research findings into society. We encourage our students to think outside the box and develop their own start-up ideas. We are the right partner when it comes to jointly addressing societal challenges in the context of sport and physical activity.
The German Sport University Cologne employs around 1,000 people. As an employer, we offer our staff a diverse, supportive and forward-looking environment.
