International Sport Development and Politics

Master of Arts (M.A.)

The world of sport is increasingly shaped by complex challenges, including governance failures, integrity issues, human rights concerns and questions of social responsibility. At the same time, sport is recognised as a powerful tool for social development, inclusion, and international cooperation. Understanding and addressing these dynamics requires critical, interdisciplinary perspectives.

The M.A. programme International Sport Development and Politics (DEV) is aimed at graduates from various fields who are interested in the political, social, cultural, and economic dimensions of sport. The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of structures, actors, and conflicts in sport, with a strong international and comparative focus.

It combines sport sciences with perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and economics and is strongly research-oriented. Graduates are prepared for responsible roles in the field of sport development and politics, including positions in sport organisations, public institutions, and NGOs.

The M.A. DEV is structured into 13 modules that support a progressive learning process through basic, advanced and specialised courses.

The programme begins with foundational modules designed to establish a common knowledge base among students from different academic backgrounds. Early modules focus on key concepts in sport development and politics as well as methodological skills in social science research.

Throughout the programme, perspectives from the humanities and social sciences are combined with elements of sport management and sport economics. You will explore topics such as national and European sport systems, Olympic policy, sociological and legal dimensions of sport, and sport economics. Research-oriented teaching formats and individual projects play an important role in developing analytical and problem-solving skills.

In the third semester, the programme focuses on applying previously acquired knowledge to current issues in sport development, sport policy and sport systems. Elective courses allow you to develop an individual academic or professional profile. Additional practice-oriented modules support the connection between theory and professional application.

The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master’s thesis, in which you independently conduct research on a topic of your choice.
