Teacher training

The German Sport University Cologne offers teacher training in physical education for five types of school: primary schools, special needs schools, Hauptschulen, Realschulen, secondary schools and comprehensive schools, as well as vocational colleges. The degree programme is divided into a Bachelor’s and a Master’s phase; the Bachelor’s programme lasts six semesters and is tailored to specific school types. In addition to Physical Education, which includes both practical and theoretical components, you will study a second teaching subject at the University of Cologne or Siegen, as well as educational sciences. Practical placements and the ‘German as a Second Language’ module prepare you for your future career. The programme concludes with a Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis.

Bachelor

A Bachelor’s degree programme at the German Sport University Cologne lasts six semesters and is undertaken on a full-time basis. There are five degree programmes to choose from. To apply, candidates must hold the Abitur or an equivalent qualification for university entry, and must pass the sports aptitude test. All students begin with Basic studies, which cover the theoretical and practical fundamentals of sports science. Building on this, students acquire key skills that prepare them for their studies and future careers. During the specialisation phase, students can choose individual areas of focus and expand their specialist knowledge in a targeted manner – depending on their interests and career prospects.

Master

The German Sport University Cologne offers eight consecutive Master’s programmes designed to deepen students’ knowledge or open up new areas of specialisation. These programmes lead to the internationally recognised degrees of Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.). All degree programmes are designed as full-time on-campus courses with a standard period of study of four semesters and are limited to 30 places per degree programme. Enrolment is possible at the start of each winter semester. Depending on the programme, the language of instruction is either German or English. The programme is structured in modules: each module combines content, learning objectives and assessments. A physical aptitude test is not required; there are no tuition fees, only the semester fee.
