Physical Education

The German Sport University Cologne offers training in physical education for five types of school: primary schools, special needs schools, secondary modern schools, secondary schools, comprehensive schools, grammar schools and vocational colleges. The course is divided into a Bachelor’s and Master’s phase; the Bachelor’s programme lasts six semesters and is specific to each school type. In addition to the subject of Physical Education, which includes practical and theoretical components, you will study a second teaching subject at the University of Cologne or Siegen, as well as educational sciences. Practical placements and the module ‘German as a Second Language’ prepare you for your future career. The course concludes with a Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis.

Bachelor Programme

A bachelor’s degree programme at the German Sport University Cologne lasts six semesters and is undertaken on a full-time basis. There are five degree programmes to choose from. To apply, you must have a school-leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification for university entry, and you must pass the sports aptitude test. All students begin with a common foundation course that covers the theoretical and practical basics of sports science. Building on this, students acquire key skills that prepare them for their studies and future careers. During the specialisation phase, students can set individual priorities and expand their specialist knowledge in a targeted manner – depending on their interests and career prospects.

Master's programmes

The German Sport University Cologne offers eight consecutive Master’s programmes designed to deepen students’ knowledge or open up new areas of specialisation. These programmes lead to the internationally recognised degrees of Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.). All programmes are designed as full-time on-campus courses with a standard duration of four semesters and are limited to 30 places per programme. Enrolment is possible at the start of the winter semester. Depending on the programme, the language of instruction is either German or English. The programme has a modular structure: each module combines content, objectives and examinations. A sports aptitude test is not required; there are no tuition fees, only the semester fee.
