The German Sport University Cologne is the only university specialising in sport in Germany and ranks amongst the world’s leading institutions in the field of sport science. We conduct research into sport in all its diversity, share our findings with society and combine excellent research with a practice-oriented degree programme.
Science for sport – since 1947
The German Sport University Cologne, founded in 1947, is recognised both nationally and internationally as a leading institution in the field of sport science. Across 19 institutes, as well as several affiliated institutes and transfer centres, we conduct interdisciplinary research into complex societal issues – ranging from elite sport and performance optimisation, through education, prevention and health, to digital training methods, sport psychology, inclusion and sustainability. Situated in the heart of Cologne’s green belt, Germany’s only sports university offers state-of-the-art facilities and an inspiring environment for around 6,000 students from over 85 countries and 1,000 staff members. Over 60 international university partnerships strengthen the global exchange of knowledge and innovation. The German Sport University Cologne combines academic excellence, social relevance and interdisciplinary diversity – and is actively shaping the future of sport through research, teaching and practice.

Introducing the Rector’s Office
Our Rectorate leads and represents the university in all strategic, academic and administrative matters. Together with our research institutes, central departments and governing bodies, it develops the university’s strategic guidelines – with a clear aim: to shape research, teaching and knowledge transfer in a forward-looking manner.
The Rectorate comprises the Rector as Chair, four Pro-Rectors and the Chancellor.
