Arbeitsgruppen AG NeuroPsychoImmunologie Forschungsgruppe NeuroPsychoImmunologie Unsere multidisziplinäre Forschungsgruppe untersucht die Schnittpunkte zwischen Immunologie, psychischer Gesundheit, Neurowissenschaften und Sportwissenschaft. Obwohl wir in verschiedenen Disziplinen arbeiten, liegt unser Hauptaugenmerk auf den Mechanismen des Tryptophan-Wegs. Tryptophan ist ein Vorläufer von Serotonin, einem wichtigen Neurotransmitter, und Kynurenin, dessen Metaboliten mit dem Immunsystem interagieren. Wir analysieren diese Stoffwechselwege bei gesunden Personen, impulsiven Personen und Patienten mit impulsivitätsbezogenen Störungen (z. B. depressive Störungen, Borderline-Persönlichkeitsstörung, Schizophrenie, bipolare Störung). Darüber hinaus untersuchen wir die genetischen, epigenetischen und strukturellen Marker, die mit diesen Erkrankungen in Verbindung stehen, und erforschen, wie sie durch Lebensstilmaßnahmen wie körperliche Bewegung, Lichtexposition und Ernährung moduliert werden können. Dabei werden die Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Subpopulationen von Erythrozyten systematisch untersucht. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Forschung liegt auf der Interaktion von Stickstoffmonoxid, freien Radikalen und anderen Metaboliten mit zellulären Strukturen. Ziel ist es, die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Bedingungen – wie externe Scherkräfte, körperliches Training, Hypoxie oder die Lagerung von Blut – auf das Erythrozyten-System umfassend zu analysieren. Diese Untersuchungen werden sowohl an gesunden Proband *innen und Sportler* innen als auch an Patient*innen mit verschiedenen Erkrankungen, beispielsweise Long-COVID oder Sichelzellenanämie, durchgeführt. Dabei wird eine geschlechtsspezifische Betrachtung der Ergebnisse sichergestellt. Hierbei stehen die Aufklärung molekularer Mechanismen, die Entwicklung von neuen Therapie- und Präventionsansätzen und die Identifizierung von körperlichen Risken durch die Einnahme von Nahrungsergänzungsmittel und Medikamenten im Fokus. Zudem ist die AG als Mitglied des Zentrums für preventiver Dopingforschung aktiv in der Dopingprevention tätig. Methodisch werden hiefür Methoden der Molekularbiologie, der Zellkultur und der Anlaytik , in vivo Methoden und humane Interventionsstudien eingesetzt. Diese umfassen sowohl Ernährungs- als auch Trainingsinterventionen bei Gesunden, Leistungssportlern , Kranken und alten Menschen. In Kooperation mit den Kliniken der Stadt Köln gGmbH, Betriebsteil Kinderkrankenhaus Amsterdamer Straße werden fortlaufende Sportangebote, motorische Testungen, Sport-Aktionstage und gezielte Interventionsstudien umgesetzt und evaluiert. In den vergangenen Jahren standen u.a. das Vibrations- und Sensomotoriktraining als gezielte neuromuskuläre Trainingsformen im Fokus der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit in der AG. Dabei stehen insbesondere körperliche Anpassungsreaktionen im Vordergrund, die im Rahmen klinischer Studien an unterschiedlichen Patient*innengruppen getestet und analysiert werden. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Forschung liegt auf der Entschlüsselung mechanistischer Zusammenhänge innerhalb der Tumormikroumgebung. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Rolle von Myokinen und deren Einfluss auf tumorbiologische Prozesse sowie auf die Immunantwort. Ziel ist es, die molekularen und zellulären Mechanismen zu verstehen, durch die körperliche Aktivität die Tumorprogression und Therapieresistenz beeinflussen könnte. Diese Untersuchungen werden sowohl bei Patient*innen mit verschiedenen Tumorentitäten als auch in Modellen im Labor durchgeführt. Vom 29.05. - 31.05.2025 fand die asp-Jahrestagung an der Ruhr Universität in Bochum statt. MentalGestärkt hatte einen Arbeitskreis zum Thema "Psychische Gesundheit im Leistungssport - Best Practice Initiativen und Projekte in Deutschland" organisiert. In diesem wurden Projekte vorgestellt, die sich mit der Förderung der psychischen Gesundheit im Leistungssport befassen und von der Robert-Enke-Stiftung gefördert bzw. mit dem Förderpreis „Seelische Gesundheit im Nachwuchsleistungssport“ ausgezeichnet wurden. Lena Steindorf stellte eine Längsschnittstudie sowie ein Interventionskonzept bei der TSG Hoffenheim mit dem Titel „Psychische Gesundheit im Profi-Fußball: wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und angewandte Perspektiven“ vor. Simon Borgmann & Timo Heinze vom NLZ des Fußballclubs Bayer 04 Leverkusen berichteten über die erfolgreiche Umsetzung des Readiness-Konzepts, einer sportpsychologischen Begleitung von verletzten Spielern bis zur Rückkehr auf den Platz. Martin Leo Reinhard stellte das Konzept „jung & wild & gesund“ zur Erhaltung und Förderung mentaler Gesundheit von jungen Nachwuchsleistungsfußballer:innen vor, welches im Nachwuchsleistungszentrum des VFB Stuttgart umgesetzt wurde. Marion Sulprizio (Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln) präsentierte die interdisziplinäre Netzwerkarbeit von MentalGestärkt. Athlet:innen, Trainer:innen und andere Personen aus dem Leistungssport können bei MentalGestärkt Beratung und Unterstützung bekommen.
