Gestrinone


Definition

Gestrinone (Fig. 1) is a steroid hormone used medically to treat endometriosis. Gestrinone is not commercially available in Germany. In Switzerland, gestrinone is marketed under the name Nemestran® by Aventis Pharma.

Effects and Use

Gestrinone is a synthetic derivative of the steroid 19-nortestosterone. As a pituitary inhibitor, it primarily suppresses the release of the gonadotropins LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). In addition, it has anti-progesterone and anti-estradiol properties. These effects are utilized in the treatment of endometriosis. 

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity.

Doping

Gestrinone is specifically listed on the IOC and WADA Prohibited Lists under the category of anabolic-androgenic steroid hormones. To date, no positive doping cases involving gestrinone have been reported.

Side Effects

  • Hot flashes
  • Changes in libido
  • Weight gain due to sodium/water retention
  • Acne
  • Seborrhea
  • Hirsutism
  • Hair loss
  • Rare and reversible: voice changes and reduction in breast volume.
  • Other: Headaches, nervousness, cramps, indigestion, joint pain.
  • Elevated liver transaminases
