Working together for equal opportunities at GSU

At the German Sport University Cologne, physical activity is more than just part of the curriculum – it also symbolises openness and personal development. We foster a university community that welcomes people from all walks of life.

Whether you’re balancing your studies with family responsibilities, studying with a disability, starting afresh as a refugee, or looking to combine elite sport with your studies: The GSU offers targeted support, advice and the structural framework for a successful degree programme in all circumstances.

Diversity in all its forms – whether in terms of background, gender, sexual identity, disability, age, social status, religion or worldview – is seen at the GSU as an asset and a driving force for innovation, and is actively promoted.

Studying as a TIN* person

We warmly welcome people of all genders and gender identities to GSU!

We are firmly committed to accepting, including and supporting trans*, inter* and non-binary athletes alongside cis-female and cis-male athletes. Furthermore, we wish to explicitly promote, encourage and support trans*, inter* and non-binary athletes in the allocation of study places.

Special provisions for the physical aptitude test

To take part in the physical aptitude test at the German Sport University Cologne, you must specify your gender (male/female/diverse). Individuals whose gender is listed as ‘diverse’ in the register of residents, or who have chosen not to specify a gender designation, may take part in a procedure involving the following persons: the Vice-Rector for Diversity or another person appointed by the Rector’s Office; examiners in the five sports disciplines of the physical aptitude test; and a person appointed by the Rector’s Office to assess practical sporting aptitude.

Further details of the procedure are regulated by the Rector’s Office.

Diversity in sport: faith and exercise

Respecting religious needs – enabling participation

Here at GSU, we recognise that certain sporting activities may conflict with religious beliefs and practices. By making flexible adjustments to our sporting activities, we ensure that everyone, regardless of their religion, can participate on an equal footing.

These include, amongst other things

  • alternative sports options that do not involve physical contact
  • sports classes that can be held in single-sex groups
  • alternative times for sporting activities to accommodate religious beliefs
  • acceptance of religious requirements regarding sportswear
