University Health Management
The health of all students and staff is a central part of campus life. Our university health management programme brings together a wide range of services, initiatives and stakeholders with the aim of creating an environment that promotes health for study, work and everyday life.
We take a holistic approach: alongside exercise and sport, we also focus on mental health, prevention and the creation of healthy study and working conditions. The aim is to strengthen individual resources and promote long-term health and wellbeing.
Health management brings together various departments and initiatives on campus and makes them centrally accessible. Programmes are developed, coordinated and refined across the board to reach both students and staff in equal measure.
Our services include, amongst other things:
- Exercise and sport programmes to promote health
- Counselling and support services
- Measures for prevention and health literacy
- Initiatives to ensure that study and work environments are designed with health in mind
Whether it’s diving, breakdancing, floorball, rugby or Tai Chi Chuan – the General University Sports programme at the German Sport University Cologne has plenty to offer. Together with the University Sports programme at the University of Cologne, the two institutions offer the city’s most comprehensive sports programme under the umbrella of UniSport. The courses taking place in the immediate vicinity of the campus alone account for a total of around 500 hours of university sport per week, covering more than 120 different sports and physical activities.
Competitive sports teams
Students and staff at German universities and universities of applied sciences have the opportunity to take part in an attractive range of competitions on behalf of their institution, either as part of a team or as individual competitors. These events are organised by the umbrella organisation for university sports bodies, the Allgemeine Deutsche Hochschulsportverband (adh). There are national (DHM) and international German University Championships (IDHM) in over 30 sports, as well as other tournaments and inter-university competitions.
Cologne Competitive Sports Association
Since 2002, competitive athletes from the German Sport University Cologne and the University of Cologne have been able to compete together in strong teams as a Competition Community (WG). The WG Cologne’s many outstanding successes at the adh championships are a clear sign of this successful partnership. Sportissimo Choir
Whether you’re a bathroom singer or a former soloist in the school choir – everyone is warmly invited to join the Sportissimo choir at the University of Sport! Our repertoire ranges from classics to pop songs and offers something for everyone. We rehearse every Wednesday from 7 pm to 9 pm in our university’s Musisches Forum, under the direction of Dr Elisabeth Schlüssel. The choir’s members are mainly students and staff from the University of Sport, but members of other Cologne universities are also very welcome. Just pop in and join in!
Student involvement
Student involvement at our university takes many different forms and offers numerous opportunities to play an active part in shaping campus life. Whether in political voluntary roles in the Parliament or the Senate, as a representative on the General Students’ Committee (AStA) or in other committees and initiatives – students can contribute their ideas and take on responsibility in all these areas. It is not just a matter of representing the interests of the student body, but also of gaining valuable experience, discovering new perspectives and actively helping to develop the university as a shared space.
The Student Parliament (or ‘StuPa’ for short) is the highest governing body at SpoHo. The StuPa deals with issues relating to university policy and decides on the student body’s budget. As is customary in politics, candidates must secure the necessary number of votes to be elected to the Parliament. For this reason, an election is held annually, giving every student the opportunity to stand as a candidate for a seat in the Parliament. This position is an honorary one and is therefore unpaid.
The Academic Senate is the highest governing body at the university. As a democratically elected collegial body, it performs advisory and supervisory management functions. As the views of students are also important, three students may stand for election to the Senate on a voluntary basis each year.
Anyone who would like to play an active role in university life would be well advised to take on a job with the AStA. As a department representative, you will represent and support students’ interests. At the same time, you will act as the point of contact for a specific area, such as politics, social affairs or international affairs. Anyone wishing to work as a paid department representative can apply once a year to the StuPa for their preferred role within one of the eight departments.
The AStA runs a sort of stationery shop where students can buy and photocopy lecture notes and study materials at affordable prices. Students who are interested can apply directly to the AStA for a position as a staff member on an hourly-wage basis.
