The German Sport University Cologne stands out like no other university for academic excellence in the field of sport and physical activity. As Germany’s only university specialising in sport, it focuses its expertise entirely on this field – and thus occupies a leading position both nationally and internationally.

Whilst sports science is usually just one sub-discipline at other universities, in Cologne it is at the heart of research and teaching. Across a total of 19 academic institutes, supplemented by affiliated institutes and transfer centres, the subject is researched in its entirety. The scope ranges from health and biomechanical issues, through psychological and pedagogical approaches, to economic, historical and ethical perspectives on sport.

This concentration of expertise in one location enables an exceptional level of interdisciplinarity. Complex societal challenges – such as a lack of physical activity, demographic change or issues of social integration – can thus be analysed and addressed from a variety of academic perspectives. The university sees itself not only as a centre for the production of knowledge, but also as an active catalyst for societal developments.

Nestled within the Müngersdorf Sports Park in Cologne’s green belt, the university offers a virtually unique infrastructure. Modern sports facilities, laboratories and teaching buildings create ideal conditions for study, research and competitive sport. More than 6,000 students from over 85 countries benefit from this environment, as do around 1,000 staff members.

The university also has a strong international network. Numerous partnerships and its position in international rankings underline its global standing. As part of international networks, it actively contributes to the further development of sports science.

The range of courses on offer includes teacher training, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes, as well as a wide variety of continuing professional development programmes. The aim is to prepare students specifically for an increasingly diverse professional field – ranging from schools and elite sport to health promotion, management and research.

In its current university development plan, the university sets out a clear mission: through excellent research, high-quality teaching and the transfer of scientific knowledge, it aims to contribute to tackling key societal challenges – particularly in the areas of health, sustainability and social inclusion.
