The decision regarding Germany’s bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games has been made. Prof. Ansgar Thiel, rector of the German Sport University Cologne, comments on the decision and explains its significance for the German Sport University Cologne and the region.
“The decision has been made: Munich will represent Germany in the bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and wish them every success in the remainder of the bidding process!”
Even though the decision ultimately did not go to Cologne and our region, the bid process has already made a difference here. Ideas have emerged, networks have been forged, and existing connections have been further strengthened.
In my view, this momentum should not end with the decision. The issues that occupied us during the bid process remain important: more physical activity, high-quality and accessible sports programs, sustainable sports infrastructure, and the question of how sports can contribute to the development of our city and region.
For the German Sport University Cologne in particular, it is important that new contacts and new forms of exchange emerged during the bid process. Dialogue with the city and other partners has also intensified. We want to build on this and use the ideas and networks that have been created to continue working together on these issues.
“After all, regardless of the Olympics, it remains a shared responsibility to continue improving the conditions for sports and physical activity in Cologne and the region and to strengthen sports as an important part of our society.”
