Positive EPO test results in WADA-accredited laboratories worldwide (IOC/WADA statistics)

The detection of erythropoietin (EPO) using isoelectric focusing (IEF) has been used in WADA-accredited doping control laboratories since 2000. The SDS-PAGE method has been used in addition since 2009, and the SAR-PAGE method since 2013. According to the current technical document for EPO (WADA), analysis using exclusively the SAR-PAGE method has been permitted since 2013.
Since 2000, there have been approximately 1,300 positive test results worldwide for the detection of recombinant EPO (rEPO), the EPO modifications darbepoetin (dEPO), and CERA in doping controls. The following table summarizes the number of positive test results for the various forms of EPO for each respective year.
