The institute’s main areas of focus are preventive doping research, sports nutrition research, and doping analysis. Each year, the institute analyzes approximately 20,000 human and 4,000 equine doping samples. To support its research priorities, the institute employs a wide range of state-of-the-art analytical techniques and, particularly through its many years of experience in mass spectrometry, regularly contributes groundbreaking findings to the advancement of doping analysis.

Analytical laboratory at the Institute of Biochemistry at the German Sport University Cologne (as of October 2018). The laboratory houses several GC/MS-MS instruments (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) as well as several LC/MS-MS instruments (liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry) in the foreground.
