About the Institute

The Institute of Biochemistry at the German Sport University Cologne is one of the oldest anti-doping laboratories in the world. The institute’s founder and first director was Prof. Manfred Donike, a pioneer in anti-doping analysis and a member of the IOC Medical Commission.

He headed the institute from 1977 to 1995. From 1995 to 2017, the institute was led by Donike’s student, Prof. Wilhelm Schänzer. Today, the institute is accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) and has been led by Prof. Mario Thevis since August 1, 2017. The institute’s main areas of focus are preventive doping research, research in the field of sports nutrition, and doping analysis. Each year, the institute analyzes approximately 20,000 human and 4,000 equine doping samples. To support its research priorities, the institute utilizes a wide range of state-of-the-art analytical techniques and, particularly through its extensive experience in mass spectrometry, regularly contributes groundbreaking results to the advancement of doping analysis.
