Goal & Purpose

The Institute shall uphold and honor the legacy of Manfred Donike and will support the work he initiated in the fight against doping. The Institute shall promote all measures aimed at preventing harm to athletes’ health resulting from the misuse of medications. The primary goal is to safeguard the health and well-being of children and adolescents growing up in sports and recreational clubs.

1. Measures within the scope of research aimed at improving detection methods for prohibited substances shall be supported. This support is primarily directed toward the following research projects, which are already underway or planned at the Institute of Biochemistry at the German Sport University (DSHS). The projects are also funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the German Sport University:

Further development and optimization of high-resolution mass spectrometry for the detection of anabolic agents for use in routine doping analysis.
Investigations into the steroid profile (urine and blood) of endogenously produced steroid hormones.
Investigations into the metabolism of anabolic agents with the identification of long-term metabolites.
Use of immunoaffinity chromatography (IAC) for improved isolation of doping substances.
Carbon isotope mass spectrometry (13C/12C) for the detection of doping with endogenous steroid hormones (e.g., testosterone).
Detection methods for the determination of peptide hormones such as erythropoietin (EPO), somatotropin (growth hormone), and IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor).

2. The Society shall enable scientists to further their qualifications through new research projects and training in new technologies. This also includes the promotion of doctoral and postdoctoral research projects.

3. The organization of conferences and workshops regarding the further development and improvement of doping analysis at the international level should be supported.

4. Efforts to improve the information provided to athletes, coaches, officials, physicians, support staff, and teachers regarding doping-related substances, with particular attention to health risks, should be promoted

About Prof. Dr. Manfred Donike (August 23, 1933–August 21, 1995)

Manfred Donike was born on August 23, 1933, in Köttingen, near Cologne.

He studied chemistry at the University of Cologne and earned his doctorate in 1965 with a dissertation titled "Contribution to the Analysis of Acylated Anthocyanins."

His athletic ambitions were focused on cycling, where he became known far beyond the Cologne area through his successes in track cycling, particularly in six-day races.

As early as 1966, he published his first paper on the detection of doping using “chromatographic methods.”

Starting in 1968, as an assistant at the Biochemical Institute of the University of Cologne, he worked intensively on the detection of doping substances using gas chromatography.

In 1969, he was the first to successfully synthesize MSTFA (N-methyl-N-trimethylsilyl-trifluoroacetamide).

MSTFA is now considered the most commonly used derivatization agent for gas chromatography.

Starting in 1970, he conducted doping tests for the German national sports federations.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Manfred Donike oversaw the doping controls, employing systematic analysis using modern methods of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for the first time.

In 1975, he received the venia legendi for analytical biochemistry at the University of Cologne, and in 1977 he was appointed professor and director of the Institute of Biochemistry at the German Sport University Cologne.

In 1975, he was appointed to the Medical Commission of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and in 1980 to the “Biochemistry and Doping” subcommission of the IOC Medical Commission.

In 1977, Manfred Donike was appointed professor at the newly founded Institute of Biochemistry at the German Sport University Cologne.

In 1983, he developed a derivatization method that enables the detection of anabolic steroids from just 2 ml of urine. This method is now used worldwide in all WADA-accredited laboratories.

In 1993, he was awarded the Jean Servais Stas Medal by the Society for Toxicological and Forensic Chemistry in recognition of his services to the forensic sciences.

In March 1995, the IOC decided to award him the Olympic Order.

This award was presented to Mrs. Donike during the memorial service on August 30, 1995.

On August 21, 1995, Manfred Donike passed away while en route to Harare, Zimbabwe, where he was preparing a laboratory for doping controls at the 1995 All African Games.
