Olympic Studies Centre

Olympic Studies Centres (OSCs) are important links between the Olympic movement and the academic world. The Olympic Studies Centre at the German Sport University Cologne was founded in 2005 and established as a central research and teaching institution.

The predecessor of the OSC was the Carl and Liselott Diem Archive (CuLDA), which continues to exist as part of the present-day OSC. The Olympic Studies Centre Cologne (OSC Cologne) carries on the tradition of the CuLDA by conducting research and offering courses on the Olympic Movement, Olympic sport, and the Olympic Games at both the national and international levels.

The profile of OSC Cologne reflects the requirements of a modern higher-education environment, and its current activities in research, teaching, consulting, and archival work demonstrate how the Centre’s core objectives can be put into practice.

Its activities are as follows:

Transfer

  • Transfer & dissemination of scholarly knowledge on the Olympic Movement to the Olympic community through the international part-time Master of Arts (M.A.) in Olympic Studies degree program.

Development

  • Development and enhancement of research projects and the provision of information and documentation resources within the research center.

Creation

  • Creating synergies in teaching, research, and advisory activities between national and international Olympic Studies Centres.

Strengthen

  • Strengthening the links between the OSC Cologne and institutions of the Olympic Movement at the national and international levels.
