The Project

Using the DSV national training center in Ruhpolding (ChiemgauArena) as a case study, a methodological approach was developed as part of a reference project that, in addition to providing fundamental scientific insights and findings regarding the Ruhpolding site, also allows for its application to other locations.

As part of the project, various measuring devices (weather station, temperature sensors) were deployed in and around the snow depot. In addition, three time-lapse cameras were installed, and drone flights (orthophotos and thermal images). The project’s results provide detailed insight into the melt dynamics in the snow depot and the associated processes and influences during the summer of 2016.

In the pilot study at the Nordic Center Notschrei (DSV National Training Center for Nordic Biathlon), a cost- and resource-efficient method for maintaining the snow depot over the summer for the training and competition center is being developed over several years. The goal here is to ensure a reliable snow supply for training, particularly in early and mid-winter. The projects are funded by the Foundation for Safety in Ski Sports with the aim of developing environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient methods to secure the training centers.
