Clinical and Technological Biomechanics

Our department focuses on the interrelationships between movement and stress on the human musculoskeletal system at the macroscopic level in order to optimize clinical, technological, and exercise-related interventions.

Understanding Movement. Shaping the Future.

Using translational and applied research approaches, we develop solutions for:

  • improving athletic performance and quality of movement,
  • the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in daily life, sports, and the workplace,
  • accelerating and optimizing rehabilitation processes.

A central focus of our work is researching the interaction between the musculoskeletal system and technology in sports, clinical settings, and the workplace. In addition, we investigate how training and therapy can influence and effectively improve movement execution as well as the strain on the musculoskeletal system.

In doing so, we combine multidisciplinary expertise from the fields of orthopedic biomechanics, human-technology interaction, and sports biomechanics. This enables us to generate scientifically sound insights with high practical relevance—for research, industry, and anyone interested in movement, health, and performance.

In doing so, we do not view biomechanical processes in isolation, but rather within the context of complex functional relationships. In this way, we create a robust data foundation that contributes both to answering challenging scientific questions and to developing practical solutions. Putting Research into Practice

We view biomechanical research not only as a means of gaining knowledge, but also as the foundation for practical applications. The Department of Clinical and Technological Biomechanics at the German Sport University Cologne operates at the intersection of science, technology, and practice. Our goal is to make research measurable, tailor it to specific questions, and develop innovative solutions together with our partners.
