Students are provided with historical knowledge that conveys the interaction between sport and movement culture and broader societal processes. Knowledge of the historical roots and traditions of sport is intended to enable them to perceive current developments in a differentiated manner and to critically examine them.
Key research areas include the history of the international anti-doping movement, the development of the “Sport for All” movement in both Olympic and non-Olympic contexts, sport in Cologne during National Socialism, the analysis and processing of the archival holdings of the German Sport University Cologne, and the historical foundations as well as the contemporary critical analysis of the Olympic Movement across different eras.
In teaching and research, the institute forms a functional unit with the Centre for Olympic Studies at the German Sport University Cologne. Institutional overlaps include research publications on the Olympic Movement, the implementation of the IOC-recognized international continuing education program Executive Master in Olympic Studies.
